My Lucy is a seasoned traveler at one, I should say her parents are seasoned at traveling with child. Here is my advice…….
Keep your sense of humor, it is difficult to travel with an infant but I have some tips for making it easier and more manageable. Pack at least a day ahead of time, you’ll have enough to do the day of. Pack light. Pack light. Really, pack light. Your baby doesn’t need his own suitcase, his little clothes will fit in yours.Check your bags. You’ll need to carry on a large diaper bag, and an FAA approved car seat. They make covers for your car seat with wheels. Wear your baby. Bjourn and hotsling are my favorite carriers, but there are many out there, find one that is right for you and your little one.I like bjourn because dad can wear it too! Your baby will relax next to you, and your hands will be free. If you can afford the extra seat, buy it. Not only is it safer, you’ll have a much better experience. If baby will occupy your lap the one bulky item I recommend is a boppy pillow or the infant lounger made by boppy, (unless you’re traveling alone in a middle seat, it won’t fit). This pillow is fantastic on a long flight, your baby can sleep and your arms won’t fall off!
Once you are past security buy a bottle of water, we do supply it on the airplane but that way it’s there when you need it. Arrive early, you’ll be able to pre-board. Once settled in relax, the hard part is over. If your baby starts crying at any point during the flight, please don’t worry about the other passengers, babies cry. If you relax usually baby will too so if it really is a concern to you and will help you relax bring plenty of five dollar bills to buy drinks and headphones for your neighbors or a much less expensive alternative, bring a bunch of those cheap foam earplugs to pass out. If you still get a dirty look you can always suggest that next time they charter the private jet!
Now have a glass of wine and enjoy the ride.
WHAT TO BRING IN THE DIAPER BAG/CARRY ON
The obvious….wipes, diapers, etc. plus
xtra diapers…one for every hour plus five. (You have to be prepared for weather diversions, mechanicals, unexpected things can and do happen)
one extra outfit for your baby
bags for trash, diapers etc. (I use those plastic supermarket bags)
enough formula, and snacks for mom and dad, as with diapers be prepared for diversions.
Bottles….I like the Playtex drop in system for bottles because I can bring one or two bottles, and a lot of extra liners, rings, and nipples without taking up too much room.
a couple toys
tylenol, motrin, teething tablets…just make sure the liquids are under 3 oz. and in a ziploc.
I use a diaper bag big enough for my wallet and things, it really helps to simplify.
