This one seems to be confusing some people. First let me say, I am required to “inform” you to turn off ALL electronic devices when we close the aircraft door for departure. Don’t shoot the messenger….the dirty look….I’ve gotten a few: )
The other response I get is…..”ummm, yeah, it’s in “Airplane Mode.” followed by a “look” of….duh, stupid…..yes, it’s true some people look at us that way….surprising, huh? Ok, here is the deal with “Airplane Mode,” it turns the phone function off, and since you have to…turn ALL electronic devices off for departure, that applies to your device, even in ” Airplane Mode.”
Once we reach an altitude of 10,000 ft, by all means, well not by “all means,” turn the phone function off, and place it in “Airplane Mode,” since phones are not allowed to be used in the air: )
[…] A: Another common misunderstanding is airplane mode. Airplane mode simply turns off the phone function of your device which is important because “phones” are never allowed to be used at anytime above 10,000 feet. A lot of passengers think that if they put their device in airplane mode that they can keep it on anytime during the flight, keep in mind that all devices no matter what mode need to be off and stowed for taxi, take off and landing. For more information on airplane mode check out my passenger service announcement: airplane mode. […]
I fly a lot and no one has ever answered yet why electronic devices must be turned off. They will say because it’s the regulations, rules etc., but not why. I have read that it does not create problems when taking off or landing contrary to popular belief. So what is the real answer?
